I played with the hem of my shirt as I looked down at the car floor. The fabric coming in contact with my trembling fingers.
Breath Rowan… breath.
Butterflies formed in the pit of my stomach.
You’ve done this before. You’ve been the new girl at school before. You’ll be alright.
As time dragged on longer the more anxious I felt.
“We’re here,” my father’s deep voice bellowed.
Remember start strong even if you’re not.
“Thanks dad for dropping me off,” I said. I reached for the handle of the car door and started to open it. As I did so, a blast of fresh air struck my face, causing goosebumps across my arms.
“You don’t seem like you’re nervous!” My dad exclaimed before I left the car.
“I’m not. Bye!” I said smiling as if I wasn’t shaking like a puppy in the inside. If only that was true.
“Well have fun at your first day of school sweetie, bye,” my dad said, driving off once I got out of the car.
Here goes nothing!
I walked through the big gates and started to make my way towards the registration office. As I got closer I noticed a crowd of people outside.
Well it’s now or never…
As I walked closer and closer to the door I noticed that the loud chattering that was happening was slowly dying down to whispers. I could feel their eyes on me as I continued to walk. I simply ignored them and acted as if I was used to this.
As if they didn’t scare me at all.
Hold strong.
Don’t look down.
Keep your back straight.
Carry on…
I reached the doors to the registration office and pulled on them. Once I got inside I let a breath of relief. You did fine. They wouldn’t have even guessed that you were nervous. I managed to calm down but then I realized that when I went back out I wouldn’t have a destination to go to. The registration office wouldn’t be able to save me.
My breath quickened as I continued to think this. Calm down Rowan. Just pretend to be the mysterious, cool loner. You’ve played that card before. It will be alright. Just pray for a miracle.
I quickly signed in and prepared myself for what was to come. I opened the door and stepped outside.
